About
Report
I obtained my doctorate in Clinical Psychology in 2012 from Xavier University, which is currently ranked the 8th best Psy.
D. program in the nation.
You may be wondering what does Psy.
D." mean and how is it different from someone with a "Ph.
D.?
Both are doctoral level degrees.
The primary difference is that the training of a Psy.
D. is intensively focused on the practice of therapy and assessment of psychological concerns, with less emphasis on conducting research.
This was a perfect fit for me, as I always knew that my heart for this field was in direct interaction with clients, be it through therapy or testing.
Anxiety, Panic, & Depression
Report
Anxiety can often be underestimated in its power to impact truly every aspect of well-being.
It can hold us back at work/school, perpetuate social isolation, keep us from making important phone calls, or make us assume that we are going to mess up or sound "weird" in everyday interactions.
Perhaps one of the most frustrating aspects of anxiety is that typically anxious people are very insightful and generally know that their worries are extreme.
When the anxiety keeps "winning" in spite of this awareness, you might begin to feel helpless & inadequate over time.
Eating, Body, & Weight Concerns
Report
The progression of an eating disorder can be so subtle.
Symptoms of disordered eating can mirror socially accepted attitudes and behaviors related to food & exercise, leaving you uncertain as to whether you really have a problem.
For individuals of size, our society's difficulty accepting diversity of bodies may have planted a seed that you must lose weight to be worthwhile, even if the method leaves you malnourished and depleted of energy.
If you are exhausted by anxiety and guilt regarding food, numbers, or your body, I want you to know that you do not have to be alone any longer in that struggle.
Self Esteem, Perfectionism,& Assertiveness
Report
We are surrounded by both subtle and overt messages that there is always room for improvement in our appearance, our grades, our work, our parenting- the list is endless!
Even more damaging is the underlying message that perfection is the path to "happiness, " where happiness seems to be defined as looking good, feeling good, and performing optimally basically all of the time.
No wonder we as a nation are so often disappointed in ourselves!
For many people, difficulty asserting oneself seems to go hand in hand with low self-esteem & perfectionism.
Trauma & Emotional Neglect
Report
Trauma can occur with any experience where a person's emotional and physical boundaries are violated, or where their life- or the life of a loved one- is jeopardized.
Trauma reactions not only contribute to distressing memories, or possibly re-experiencing the trauma, but can also have a profound impact on mood, relationships, sleep, substance use, eating habits, and motivation to stay engaged in activities you once found meaningful.
The good news is that we are equipped with incredible capacity for resilience and healing the face of trauma.
