Dr. Patel completed her medical studies at Baroda Medical College in Gujarat, India in 1978, and proceeded to complete her General Psychiatry residency at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Staten Island, New York in 1986. She worked as a staff psychiatrist at that hospital in the inpatient unit and emergency department before moving to Virginia in 1989
